Sun XSLT Compiler Available
08:25, 28 Jun 2000 UTC | Leigh Dodds

Sun have announced a free early access release of its XSLT Compiler technology. The compiler is available for download from the Sun XML Developer Connection site.

The XSLTC compiler is capable of producing Java bytecode (a "translet") directly from an XSLT stylesheet. The preview release, which requires Java 1.2.x or higher, contains some sample applications, including one for the PalmPilot. Source code is not yet available, but the documentation indicates that this will be included in later releases.

An overview of the tool has also been published on the Developer Connection site. The article lists the three important benefits of the XSLTC compiler as being "speed, size and portability".
