The W3C has released Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL 2.0) as a Recommendation, and published a substantially revised Working Draft of XHTML+SMIL Profile.

SMIL 2.0 is a substantial revision of SMIL 1.0, redesigned especially to:

"Allow reusing of SMIL syntax and semantics in other XML-based languages, in particular those who need to represent timing and synchronization. For example, SMIL 2.0 components are used for integrating timing into XHTML and into SVG."

Where SMIL 1.0 was largely a standalone multimedia language, SMIL 2.0 is designed to integrate multimedia with Web content, graphics, and other vocabularies.

Toward that goal, the W3C also released a new XHTML+SMIL Profile, bringing a year-old working draft up-to-date with the latest in XHTML and W3C XML Schema.
