The W3C's SVG Working Group have published two new drafts, explaining requirements for SVG 1.1/2.0 and for SVG on mobile devices.

The first draft explains the scope of SVG 1.1 and SVG 2.0. SVG 1.1, it says, will "include a modularized version of SVG 1.0, and new features driven by the requirements of an SVG profile for mobile devices." Its development will be pursued in parallel with several SVG profiles, similar to those used in SMIL 2.0. The draft states as examples full SVG, SVG tiny, SVG basic, and possible an printing profile. SVG 2.0 will obviously incorporate all of SVG 1.1 and more advanced features such as: intra-shape text flowing and justification; a broader range of compositing operations, gradients, stroke and join styles; and z-index control.

The mobile draft has been written in response to "industry demand, overwhelming support in the SVG working group and requests from the SVG developer community." It gives usage scenarios such as mapping, animated picture messaging, industrial applications such as viewing engineering plans, and user interfaces. The requirements are defined with respect to the upcoming SVG 1.1, and as "must-haves" includes animation, interaction, embedded metadata and internationalization.
